I have just booked a flight to Nice, France with the objective of meeting and cooking with Canadian-born, French food critic Rosa Jackson. In anticipation of my trip, I’ve been seeking out French influenced recipes, including a classic lemon tart.
In my search for the perfect lemon tart recipe (other than our family’s Purity Cookbook stand by) I came across a Rosa Jackson recipe in Gourmet magazine. I also came across an enticing recipe on LemonTart.ca. As I read further, I discovered the author was a student of Rosa’s! Ah Ha! A bake off it will be – student vs. teacher.

Now that my mom has retired, she has all kinds of time to attend to “leisurely” pursuits like planting a garden and tending herb pots. I picked up a giant bag of lovely basil this weekend and made a pesto. I swapped pistachio’s for pine nuts and dressed a bit of pickeral done on the bbq. Grilled green onions are the bomb. Thanks, Jodi, for making it pretty!

The City of Saskatoon, the Farmer’s Market, and Ideas Inc. should be commended for their work on the new market site. The former dumpy industrial area has been transformed into an attractive and active community space. They seem to operate with good intentions, supporting many innovative new ventures. Good on you.
Cultivate, a “pop up” restaurant, is the latest enterprise to launch in the Farmer’s Market space. Four nights weekly, Chef Moe Mathieu and his team of culinary students set up a temporary kitchen after regular market hours, and put out a selection of bistro-esque dishes showcasing product sourced from the various market vendors. My favourite destination for a cup of high-end joe is endeavoring to take their coffee game to the next level. Museo has added roasting to their repertoire and should be roasting their own beans by the fall. Owner/barista Jimmy Oneschuk is hammering out the details for their roasting operation and will continue to serve coffee (with care) at the Mendel Art Gallery.

Before I begin, let me describe for you a common dialogue I’ve encountered quite often recently.
“hello there”
“hey, how’s it going”
“what can I get for you”
“well I was thinking of having an old fashioned”
“old fashioned, for sure, that’s a great cocktail”
“do you know how to make it?”

This spring I embarked on a short visit to New York City. I rented an apartment with my homie, Colin, on a charming street in the East Village and spent my days seeking out art galleries, classic New York cuisine and trying not to feel like a tourist.
Each morning we set out on foot, casually exploring our immediate neighbourhood en-route to an art gallery or subway station. The streets were lined with brick tenements, pockets of greenery and small business, and though gentrified, our neighbourhood was by no means antiseptic. There were enough unpleasant odors, layers of ancient filth, and neglected or otherwise homely buildings for me to enjoy the occasional Woody Allen moment.

I registered at Saveur.com so I could vote in their first annual food blog awards and I’ve been getting their regular email updates since. I usually discard these without much notice, but this Jerk Chicken recipe caught my eye. It is a tasty recipe; though I could have been a bit more heavy-handed with the chiles…

We were all thrilled to hear that Christies Mayfair Bakery was opening a new location in a prime Broadway location. With work already underway, the new location is rumored to open later this summer… apparently a pizza oven is in the works!

I know that in some restaurants in Saskatoon, the “local” caption has been beaten to death. Even trotting it out for local beef. “Because you know ranch land is at such a premium on the prairies, and our beef is very rare and specialized.” That said I did get a real kick out of foraging for morels and enjoying them in a japanese style ramen noodle soup. The mushrooms really added, I dunno, body(?) to the soup broth. Though, I heard this year was bunk for morel hunters(too much rain), these were the nicest and most abundant we’ve ever seen!
Ps, About a week earlier I saw morels for sale at the Granville Island Public Market for $54 a pound!
